Spring is just around the corner and that usually means saying hello to rain. Basement flooding is a very common problem for homeowners around this time of year. Taking precautionary steps to protect your basement and belongings from flooding, you can save time, money and the headache.
The first step is your gutters and downspouts. Check to make sure they are clear of debris. Downspouts should be attached and the recommended distance is that they should extend at least three feet away from the foundation of your house.
Windows can cause problems. Check for gaps. You can protect your basement windows if you install window well covers. These are clear acrylic covers that go over below-grade basement windows. Don’t forget to inspect your home’s foundation, both inside and out. Cracks in the foundation and basement walls are a very easy way for water to get in, so it’s important to stay on top of patching any cracks as they appear. Minor cracks can usually easy to fill in yourself, but larger problems will need the help of a professional.
